How time flies! The Wish Upon a Bone project, Singapore's first pet wish granting campaign has finally come to an end with the realization of fifth and final wish to lucky couple, Ralph and Louisa Sim and Starsky the yorkshire terrier. Although the Wishbone family finally has time to sit back and relax after 3 gruelling months of wish granting hardwork, we're starting to miss every little moment of this magical journey. The friendships we've earned, the late nights sacrificed for a bigger cause and of course, receiving those amazing wishes that never fail to put a smile on our faces :) We'll miss all of you who made Wish Upon a Bone a HUGE success, and we hope you'll do too. After receiving the customised wheelchair from Eddie’s Wheels (http://www.eddieswheels.com/) last week, we couldn’t wait any longer to help Qian Qian on it and witness her walk normally for the first time in her life.

Having such a disability since birth, Qian Qian is inevitably putting excessive pressure on her hind legs that could potentially lead to serious health problems in future. Not to mention the many insecurities she has as a two-legged dog, sticking to Jenny 24/7 for fear that she will be abandoned.

Like every normal dog, she too needs 4 legs to function. With the wheelchair, it will serve the purpose of supporting Qian Qian’s torso, lightening the burden on her hind legs and hopefully, dissolving her insecurities as well.

After two years of ‘hopping’ around with her hind legs, it is inevitable that Qian Qian needs time to adapt to the wheelchair. With several attempts and slight adjustments to the wheelchair, we managed to get Qian Qian to fit in perfectly.

Initially, Qian Qian kept resisting the wheelchair but after much comforting from Jenny, she is now trying to get use to her ‘legs’. 

“I’m really happy to see that Qian Qian will have a chance to walk normally again! Of course, I will spend time to coach Qian Qian and get her to learn how to utilise the wheelchair. It will take a lot of effort, but I’m sure it will be worth it!” says Jenny, owner of Qian Qian.

After several attempts at trying to walk with the wheelchair, Qian Qian got tired eventually and opted for a well-deserved rest. As Jenny takes time to train Qian Qian, we will definitely provide updates on her progress in due time!

2 weeks ago, we announced that we will be helping a couple, Irene and husband to involve their pet Tong Tong (Welsh Corgi) in their vow renewal ceremony. We have been busy putting our heads together to plan for the most memorable ceremony for both Irene and husband.

Unfortunately, due to some personal reasons, Irene has decided to forfeit her wish. However, we are very lucky to have found another couple who is also looking at having their vows renewed together with their furkid! We now officially announce that Ralph and Louisa would be renewing their vows together with Starsky and Wishbone!

After waiting for slightly more than a month, Qian Qian’s wheelchair is finally here! We will be fixing the wheel chair onto Qian Qian next week and she will be able to walk normally for the first time!

Jenny, owner of Qian Qian is as happy and excited like us when we broke the news to her. The early arrival of the wheelchair means that all our wishes for Qian Qian to lead a normal life would be fulfilled soon. 

We would like to give special thanks to Ms Anonymous (she refused to be named) who kindly contributed a small token for Qian Qian’s wheelchair and Eddie’s Wheel who help with customizing the wheelchair and delivering it earlier than expected.

Right after we awarded the 3rd wish to Ebon two weeks ago, we sent him straight for surgery at the Animal Recovery Centre due to the critical condition of his bladder stones.

If are an avid follower of this blog, you would know that with the help of Dr. Lee, Ebon’s surgery was a success and all the stones were removed from Ebon’s bladder after a 2-hour long surgery.

But the true test of Ebon’s strength and determination starts only after the surgery when anesthetics start to fade. After a few days of rest and loss of appetite, Ebon regains his bubbly playful self and nothing could stop him from having fun, not even the cone around his neck.  Even so, he still whines sometimes after exerting too much energy. At times, his urine still drips rather than peeing the normal way.

After a week, things started to look better and it was time for Ebon’s 1st check-up with Dr. Lee at the Animal Recover Centre. According to Dr. Lee, Ebon’s wounds are healing well and he would be allowed to remove the cone on his neck and bandages on his left leg. But to prevent more stones from re-surfacing, Dr. Lee advises that Ebon remains on the urinary diet until the results of the bladder stones test are out.

As of now, Ebon is getting more active day by day, returning back to his old bubbly self before he got diagnosed with bladder stones.

So let’s pray that the results for Ebon’s bladder stone tests turns out positive and he can return to his normal diet and live for many more years to come!

With the blink of an eye, the Wish Upon A Bone campaign is coming to an end with the last wish being awarded just yesterday. Nonetheless, we are still keeping track of the previous wishes we have awarded, making sure that all of them are fulfilled to our fullest ability!

For those who are wondering what is happening to Yu Jia and Jojo, read on as we show you how well-behaved Jojo is now.

During the very 1st training session, pet trainer, Elsa taught Yu Jia how to execute the basic instructions like ‘Sit’ and ‘Heel’. Subsequently, with the 2nd training session and daily ‘revisions’ that Yu Jia does with Jojo, there has been tremendous improvement in Jojo’s behaviour.

"At home, Jojo is very attentive and responses very well to all my instructions, especially when he knows that he will be rewarded with treats. But when we are out, Jojo often gets distracted by the surroundings and I’m still unable to control him that well. However, I am sure Jojo will prove that he is capable of behaving himself and be a friendly dog in public.” says Yu Jia.

With the 3rd obedience training, pet trainer Elsa decided to focus on teaching Jojo two important skills that he is current lacking:

(1) Proper social skills to interact with both humans and dogs
(2) Staying still when given the ‘stay’ instructions

On 27th June, one of our supporting partners – Cat Welfare Society organized the “Meet the Cheshire Cat” Tea Party at The Garden Slug Café to raise funds for their cause.

To show our support for Cat Welfare Society, Wishbone chipped in and sponsored dry food sample packs for the goodie bags given out at the fundraising event. With 63 attendees, luncheon was served and a "Cheshire Cat" contest was held for people who thinks their cats resemble or can 'smile' like the Cheshire cat.

Over the past three months, we granted and fulfilled the wishes of FOUR lucky pets that needed help –obedience training for Jojo, wheelchair for Qian Qian, medical surgery for Ebon and Alphy. Each of these wishes tells a story that re-emphasizes the importance of pet responsibility and ownership.

If you followed our blog closely this week, I bet you would have known that Wishbone successfully fulfilled Ebon’s wish for her bladder stones to be surgically removed, giving her a 2nd chance to live!

So while Ebon recovers and gets her strength back, Wishbone shifts our focus to Alphy, the other winner of the 3rd wish! Before I start explaining to you Alphy’s condition, let me share with you his story and look at an issue that Wishbone wishes to highlight on behalf of Shirley – the unethical practices of pet breeders!

New to the pet community in Singapore when she and her fiancée shifted to Singapore from Canada 2  years ago, Shirley turned to online forums and websites when they decided to own a pet. Chancing upon a cute poodle for sale, Shirley arranged for a meeting with the supposed pet owner.

Alphy, a bubbly 2 months old poodle was limping a little when Shirley first saw him. However, the owner brushed Shirley off when she questioned Alphy’s leg by saying that Alphy is still young, thus couldn’t walk well.  With much assurance that the poodle is perfectly healthy, Shirley caved in and bought Alphy home.

Worried about Alphy’s leg, Shirley bought him to a vet and found out that Alphy has a deformed hind leg caused by negligence. After more ‘investigations’, they found proof to show that the seller has been selling poodles that were of poor health conditions. Shirley spent more than $6,000 on medical treatments and surgeries to help improve the condition of Alphy’s leg and give him a better quality life. 

From here, we can see Shirley’s unconditional love for Alphy even know of his disability. Instead of choosing the easy way out – abandoning Alphy or choosing to give him up to others, they kept Alphy by their side and tried ALL MEANS to give him a better life!

And from what we understand, as much as Shirley loves Alphy, she holds a grudge against these unethical pet breeders who are still selling these ‘unhealthy’ dogs to innocent new pet owners in Singapore. Taking this opportunity, she wants to warn all Singaporeans about this in a bid to stop these unethical pet breeding practices!

But for now, with the help of Wish Upon A Bone, and renowned veterinarian, Dr Jean-Paul Ly, owner of Animal Recovery Centre, Alphy would be able to run freely like any other normal dogs!

As Alphy’s deformed hind leg is a complicated case, Dr. Ly suggested inserting a metal plate to straighten Alphy’s deformed leg, fusing the knee and the lower leg, allowing him to walk on all fours for the first time!

Without explaining further, allow us to take you through Alphy’s visit to the Animal Recovery Centre where Dr. Ly performs the tricky surgery to get Alphy to walk on all-fours for the first time!

While Dr. Ly preps for the surgery, medical professionals at the clinic help prep Alphy for the operation as well.

Assisted by Dr. Lee, Dr. Ly performs the 2-hour-long surgery that will change Alphy’s life forever!

Shortly after 2 hours, the surgery is complete and Alphy wakes up. All that is left now is to rest well, and recover with time. Good luck Alphy!
